In The Stillness

I'm afraid of the stillness
When three rings of the telephone
Become the clang of a thousand cymbals
To my seeking, sensitive ears.
The drip of a bathroom faucet Becomes a mighty, roaring waterfall.
The black fly, gliding about
Becomes an enemy midnight aircraft.

The tick of the big hall clock
Becomes the tick of gangsters' bombs--
As it hurries away the seconds, and
Minutes become long, lonely hours.
Outside,the sparkling lightning bugs
Become huge, glowing lanterns. What has happened? What is wrong?
Why--why is he so late?!
How long can I wait?
Hark! A welcome sound indeed!
A car parking in our driveway.
At last--I breathe a sigh--

My Pizza Delivery man is here--
Goodbye Hunger! Goodbye Fear!
